Construction site regulations for portable toilet hire

If there’s one place we’ve all spotted a portable toilet being used, it’s on a construction site. With a lack of fixed facilities, porta-loos are an ideal solution for all of your employees while allowing you to tackle time-restricted projects with more efficiency. As with any labour-based service, there are strict government requirements when it comes to the use of portable toilets on construction sites which are designed to ensure the facilities are safe for everyone.

Does my construction site need a portable toilet?

In short, yes. Whether you’re the Site Manager or part of the Welfare Team, ensuring access to appropriate toilet facilities on your construction site is a legal requirement. The amount required will depend on the number of workers on-site as well as the ratio of men to women. As a rule of thumb, if your construction site has:

  • 1-5 workers, you will need 1 toilet and 1 washbasin.
  • 6-25 workers, you will need 2 toilets and 2 washbasins
  •  26-50 workers, you will need 3 toilets and 3 washbasins

When calculating these figures, you need to take into account all trades and visitors to the construction site as well as your own, direct employees.

What are the legal requirements for construction site portable toilets?

The toilet facilities provided for your workers need to be adequate for the job required. You should aim to provide flushing toilets that are connected to the mains water and drainage system, where available. If this is not possible, chemical toilets (portable toilets) can be used but must abide by BS 6465-1-2006 which recommends 1 plastic toilet to every 7 people working a 40-hour week. These units must be serviced and emptied a minimum of once a week, however, the true number needs to take into account the unit’s usage.

If you have male and female workers, you will need to ensure the portable toilets provided are lockable. Urinals will need to be separate and you must provide sanitary waste facilities for female workers. Hand washing facilities must be provided in the form of either sinks or washbasins and must not be located near areas used for drinking and eating. You must also ensure that toilet and hand washing facilities are separate from exposure to hazardous substances used during working hours.
